Cambodia's electrification rate is the second-lowest among South East Asian countries. Cambodia plans to increase its power generation capacity by building hydropower and coal-fired plants by 2025, which can contribute to improve self-sufficiency of powe
Cambodia's plan to integrate a 900-megawatt (MW) liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fired power plant into its electricity system is a risky proposal. Other countries in the region, reliant on LNG imports, have seen global market disruptions impair energy security and affordability.
Major sources of local power generation are hydro and coal. Other sources include solar, fuel oil, and biomass. In addition to local power generation, Cambodia also buys electricity from neighboring countries, especially during the dry season.
The PDP outlines a comprehensive long-term plan for Cambodia's power sector that includes forecasts of demand, expansion of generation, and a plan for transmission and distribution from today until 2040. Improving reliable access to electricity in rural areas is a priority under Cambodia's power development plan.
These initiatives include 12 solar power plants, six wind farms, a combined biomass and solar facility, an LNG power generation plant, a hydropower project, and two energy storage stations.
