Yet in just a few years, it has installed a series of solar and wind projects and committed to an even larger pipeline of planned developments. As of August, Saudi Arabia had at least 58.6 gigawatts of solar and wind projects either operational, under development, or officially tendered (including both grid-connected and off-grid installations).
Two new online dashboards track Saudi Arabia's renewables projects. KAPSARC's Saudi Arabia Renewables Tracker shows data for grid-connected solar and wind projects. Meanwhile, Renewable Vision's Clean Energy Tracker includes grid-connected, off-grid, and other clean energy initiatives.
These agreements mark a major step toward the development of seven large-scale renewable energy projects—five solar photovoltaic (PV) plants and two wind power facilities—strategically located across Saudi Arabia. SPPC will serve as the procurer and off-taker for the projects.
The agreements were signed with a consortium led by ACWA Power as the main developer, in partnership with the Water and Electricity Holding Company (Badeel), owned by the Public Investment Fund, and Aramco Power, owned by Saudi Aramco. Photovoltaic solar projects include:
The total combined capacity of the seven projects is 15,000 MW—3,000 MW from wind and 12,000 MW from solar. The projects represent a total investment of over $8.3 billion and will be
