But at the same time, these burgeoning renewable energy industries will soon generate tons of waste as millions of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, wind turbines and lithium-ion EV batteries reach the end of their respective lifecycles. As the saying goes, though, one man's trash is another man's treasure.
Regarding wastewater, recycling one tonne of waste PV panels generates around 1.0 m 3 wastewater. Presently, the cost for disposal wastewater is 10–25 USD per m 3. With a target recycling efficiency of 95 %, the profit for recycling one tonne of PV panels is around 400 USD.
The increasing scrapped Si-based photovoltaic (PV) panels has become an urgent problem, and their disposal is essential for resources utilization and environment issues. This paper proposes a comprehensive process for recycling of discarded silicon-based PV panels economically, environmentally, and efficiently.
With a target recycling efficiency of 95 %, the profit for recycling one tonne of PV panels is around 400 USD. Hence, it is estimated that the total profit for recycling PV panels will reach 0.68 ∼ 3.20 billion USD by 2030 and 24.01 ∼ 31.20 billion USD by 2050. Table 1.
The volume of PV panels will peak around 2035 to 2040 with approximately 170,000 to 280,000 tons (10 to 17 million panels) disposed per year, which is equivalent to 1.7 to 2.7% of the final
