The world's wind power sector recorded strong growth in the first half of 2025, with global installations rising by 64% compared to the same period of 2024.u2028A total of 72,2 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity were added between January and June 2025, following 44,1 GW installed in the first half of the previous year.
Wood Mackenzie's Global wind power market outlook update: Q3 2025 reveals the global wind power market will achieve unparallelled milestones over the next 10 years. The industry is poised to add its second terawatt of capacity by 2030 – accomplished in just seven years compared to the 23 years it took to reach the first terawatt in 2023.
But the authors warned that the wind industry must increase its annual growth to at least 320 gigawatts by 2030 in order to meet the COP28 pledge to triple the world's installed renewable energy generation capacity by 2030, as well as to meet the Paris Agreement's ambition of capping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit).
In 2023 wind electricity generation increased by 216 TWh (up 10%), reaching more than 2330 TWh. This was the second highest growth among all renewable power technologies, behind solar PV.
